Woodworking Glossary

Table Saw

A woodworking tool consisting of a circular saw blade mounted on an arbor that is driven by an electric motor. The blade protrudes through the top of a table, which provides support for the material being cut.

Router

A power tool with a flat base and a rotating cutting bit extending past the base. The router is used to hollow out an area in the face of a workpiece or cut decorative edges.

Jointer

A woodworking machine used to produce a flat surface along a board's length. When used after the planer, it creates a fully squared, flat board with parallel surfaces.

Planer

A woodworking machine used to create a board of even thickness throughout its length and flat on both surfaces.

Band Saw

A power saw with a long, sharp blade consisting of a continuous band of toothed metal stretched between two or more wheels. It's used for cutting irregular or curved shapes and resawing lumber.

Drill Press

A fixed style of drill that may be mounted on a stand or bolted to the floor or workbench. It provides more accuracy and stability than a hand drill.
